2–3 minutes

this continues to kill channels

Good morning from New Zealand!

Yesterday I had one of my weekly calls within my course students. One channel in there has been doing particularly well lately with three of her videos in the last month being in her most viewed.

Every time I see results for a client, I get excited.

But there’s also a little bit of pressure to keep the momentum.

So, you can guess there was some disappointment when this week’s video didn’t do as well.

My first reaction was to go look at the intro, as that is where there is the biggest room for improvement for most channels.

Unfortunately, a lot of channels I talk to say the same thing about intros: I think it’s just normal that there is a steep drop off.

And this drives me nuts.

Yah, it’s normal for channels that don’t grow…

But after joining George Blackman’s course and seeing his analysis of hundreds of intros, I can tell you with certainty that it is not normal with your top performing channels.

And, I have personally seen the impact when channels take their intro seriously.

So of course, now you want my simple intro formula, and since you have been so awesome as to sign up for this newsletter, here it is:

  • Tell the camera what you are about to do.
  • Tell the camera why it matters
  • Tell the camera how you are trying to achieve the goal (foreshadow).

Now, there are a few other things to keep in mind when you make your intro.

KEEP it snappy (20-60 seconds). This is not a place to tell us your emotions, an outline of all that you will do, nor to mention the friendly baker you met on your tour.

Quite literally, spell out these three things and then jump straight into the story.

Try to have all or part of your intro where you are talking directly to the camera. Or, at the very least, let people see your face in the first 10 seconds. We are vloggers remember? People connect with people.

And finally, make sure the very first image you show matches the promise you made in the thumbnail and title. Otherwise, people will feel they clicked on clickbait.

That’s it. This is literally what I coach people through over and over, and now you have it for free.

Hope it helps. 🙂
